It Is Finished

People's last words are usually very important. John 19:30 recounts Jesus' - "It is finished."

In the Greek the phrase, "It is finished" is found in the word "Tetelestai" which means to bring to an end, or to complete something. This word in the time of Jesus was often used in reference to payment of rent or a poll tax. Written receipts were often marked with this word - "Tetelestai." This represented that a debt had been dealt with and paid completely.

When Jesus declared His last word, Matthew 27:50 tells us - And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. In a burst of passionate victorious energy Jesus declared "Tetelestai"- "It is finished."

Jesus who is Master over death then bowed his head and gave up his spirit (Jn.19:30). This was done willingly and voluntarily as our servant King. He did not die because man took His life, rather He gave up His spirit unto the Father. In the Greek "gave up" expresses a voluntary act.

His earthly mission was accomplished in entirety. Jesus was not mastered over, but rather He was the Master over death and even the circumstances as the Sovereign Lord. Death did not defeat Jesus. Torture at the hands of man resulted in triumph eternal. The great implication is that Christ's atonement is completely sufficient, giving believers the blessed reality that our salvation from the penalty of sin, is continuing and permanent forever (validated in Jesus' resurrection). All was complete.

The bill of debt for your sin amassed, which you could not pay except through eternal death...now only by genuine saving faith in Christ was now stamped "Tetelestai."
